Professional review and annual appraisal in France: what employers must do

Two interviews are often confused in France: the professional review, which is mandatory, and the annual appraisal, which is optional. They have neither the same purpose nor the same rules.

Two interviews are often confused: the professional review (entretien professionnel), which is mandatory, and the annual appraisal, which is optional. They have neither the same purpose nor the same rules.

The professional review

Mandatory for all employees, it covers career prospects, notably in terms of qualification and employment. It does not cover the assessment of work. It is held at a frequency set by law or by agreement, and on return from certain absences.

The summary review

Periodically, the professional review takes stock of the employee’s career path: reviews held, training followed, progress obtained. In companies with at least 50 employees, failures can lead to an additional contribution to the employee’s personal training account, payable by the employer.

The annual appraisal

Optional, it covers the achievement of objectives and performance. If it is put in place, employees must be informed and the criteria must be objective and relevant.

Good practice

  • Keep a calendar of reviews for each employee.
  • Use a written record and give a copy to the employee.
  • Clearly separate assessment and career prospects.
  • Link the needs identified to the training plan. See the article on vocational training

The rules on the professional review have changed recently: we check with you the framework that applies to your company.

Common mistakes

  • Merging the two interviews without clearly separating the parts: the professional review does not cover assessment.
  • Forgetting reviews on return from certain absences (maternity or parental leave, long-term sick leave, in particular).
  • Not keeping a written record given to the employee.
  • Not following up on the training needs expressed.

A simple outline for the professional review

  1. The career path since the last review: duties, training, progress.
  2. The employee’s wishes: skills to develop, mobility, projects.
  3. The actions planned: training, support, timetable.

Frequently asked questions

Does the professional review apply to small businesses?

Yes, whatever the headcount. Only some financial consequences are reserved for companies with at least 50 employees.

Can the annual appraisal and the professional review be combined?

They can take place on the same day, but must remain distinct in content and in how they are recorded.

Who should conduct the review?

The employer or a designated manager, usually the direct manager.

What should the professional review report contain?

The employee’s career prospects, training wishes and, where relevant, the actions planned. A copy is given to the employee.

Can the professional review be held remotely?

Yes, if it allows a real exchange. The written record and a copy for the employee remain necessary.
